YOUNG FARMERS

TOURING PARTY IN MASTERTON WELCOME BY THhl MAYOR « On the concluding portion of an extensive tour of the North Island, a party of sixty members of North Canterbury Young Farmers’ Club arrived in Masterton yesterday afternoon. Mr L. VZ. Blackmore, agricultural instructor, . Christchurch, is in charge. After visiting Sir William Perry’s Penrose property this morning, the Young Farmers were entertained at lunch at Messrs Hugo and Shearer’s, where they were welcomed by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan. This afternoon the party is visiting Mr James Donald’s property, and will spend the night in Featherston, leaving tomorrow for Wallaceville and the Hutt. The chairman of the District committee of Wairarapa Young Farmers’ Clubs, Mr W. James, presided at the luncheon. Mr Jordan said he was very pleased to be associated in welcoming a band of young farmers from Canterbury. He was also pleased to see that the stock of prime Canterbury had not fallen off at all, because he was from Canterbury and prime Canterbury at that. (Laughter). He was glad to know that the Young Farmers’ Club movement was thriving in Canterbury. It was certainly doing good work in the Wairarapa. It was an excellent thing for the members to be taken on such a tour and he hoped that they had learnt a lot and taught a lot. There was plenty of room for prime Canterbury in the beautiful Wairarapa district, observed the Mayor in expressing the hope that some members of the party would return to the district, perhaps to settle permanently.

Mr N. Martin welcomed the visitors on behalf of members of the Wairarapa clubs, Mr M. J. Malthus replying for the visitors. Mr F. A. Sheat, a vice-president of the North Canterbury Young Farmers’ Club also spoke, expressing 'thanks for the entertainment while in the Wairarapa.
