GIRL’S NARROW ESCAPE
STRUCK BY CAGED LIONESS. PROMPT RESCUE AVERTS SERIOUS INJURY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, This Day. Ruth Russell, a high school girl, daughter of Mr H. T. Russell, of Dannevirke, had an unenviable experience yesterday' afternoon when visiting the local showground, where the animals of a travelling circus are wintering. Along with some companions, the 'girl went to a shed in which there were lions in cages and while she was standing near a cage with her back to it a lioness shot out its right paw, struck the girl on her right arm and drew her toward the cage. A companion of the girl was trying, to pull her away when Mr G. A. Dunlop, relieving inspector at the Municipal Abattoirs, hearing screams, rushed up and< found the lioness with her right paw round, the girl’s hips trying to draw her into the cage. .Fortunately the beast was unable to get her left paw under the bar of the cage, otherwise the girl’s plight would have been very serious. Mr Dunlop, with an overcoat over his arm, sufficiently startled the animal to make it release its grip of the girl and then pulled her to safety. The girl’s right arm was badly lacerated, necessitating several stitches, but beyond this she was not injured. Those who saw what happened consider she is lucky to have got off so lightly.
