The Japanese offensive against Hankow is in full swing. A heavy death-roll has resulted from bombing raids on Kiukiang, on which two Japanese columns are advancing. BRITISH STEAMER STOPPED. SHOTS FIRED ACROSS BOWS BY JAPANESE DESTROYERS. CAPTAIN REFUSES TO PERMIT INSPECTION OF CARGO. (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) HONG KONG, July 24. Japanese destroyers fired across the bows of the British steamer Leana and halted her 50 miles from Hong Kong. A boarding party demanded to inspect the steamer’s cargo, but Captain Green firmly declined to permit this and after a long argument, the Japanese withdrew and the steamer proceeded on her way unmolested.
