ABNORMAL TIDE

WATER INVADES COTTAGE AT CASTLEPOINT An abnormal tide was experienced at Castlepoint on Thursday night at about 11 o’clock, as the result of which the water swept into the cottage of Mr W. R. Nicol, of Masterton. The force of the tide was so strong that it burst open the front door of the cottage while stones washed up by the water broke the asbestos on the seaward side of the house. There was as much as ten inches of water in the cottage at the height of the tide, and a considerable quantity of sand was deposited inside, causing damage to carpets and other household furnishings. Mr Nicol, who has owned the cottage fox- 20 years, said he had never experienced anything of that nature before. The watex- swept right across the road in the vicinity of the stream.
