HOUSEHOLD HINTS
It was always difficult to press men’s ties at home and not have marks on .the underneath edges and seams showing on top—these marks being especially evident on plain coloured ties. A remedy for this is cutting a piece of pasteboard the shape of the tie and inserting it in the tie while pressing. This eliminates any marks from underneath and helps make a perfect job. You might like to pad the pasteboard, as it might be easier to- press the tie on a softer surface. When wire coat hangers lose their handles, take the pliers and work the hanger into three sections. Bend at each end, so one end fits over the back of the stove, and the other serves as a hook for the heavy pots and pans. Hang this improvised pantry behind the stove. This coat-hanger system eliminates the stooping and bending that’s all part of the hunt for the missing pan, and it utilizes the unused space that is between the stove and wall. A pair of. loose white cotton gloves, such ‘as the inexpensive ones often found in men’s furnishing departments, if worn when cooking, will help to keep the hands in dainty condition. For general cleaning work, garden gloves of soft washable leather (sometimes listed in seed catalogues) give the desired protection. . Keep a bottle Jof kerosene in the bathroom to • remove stains from marble or tile or to wipe the enamel woodwork. It does not spoil the luster. In doing home laundry, a rubber plunger with wooden handle makes an effectve substitute for a washing machine. Remove long-standing rust from knife blades by sticking them upright in an onion and leaving them for some time. Then clean the blades with an ordinary cleaning. If you find poaching an egg to be difficult, try breaking the egg into a small tea-strainer and standing the strainer in a small saucepan of boiling water. The egg can be lifted out without breaking. For a picnic surprise, when chops are grilled, serve hot green peas from a thermos. Put them in the thermos before they are quite cooked if they are to be kept some time before using.
