THE MONEY MARKET
MOVEMENTS IN LONDON. POLITICAL REASSURANCE GIVES FIRMER TONE. (Recd This Day, 11.35 a.m.) LONDON, July 22. Political fears which unsettled the markets earlier in the week are subsiding, following on the issue of a reassuring communique concerning Captain Wiedemann’s mission to Lord Halifax. The undertone of the market remains firm. Gilt-edged stocks have been inactive, but there has been no pressure of sales. Commodity shares have been mainly quiet, following on sluggishness in the prices of materials. The depreciation of sterling against the dollar and gold continues. The gold hoarding movement and the support of sterling has this week cost the Exchange Equalisation Fund about six millions sterling.
