MEETING OF WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNCIL INCREASE IN GENERAL RATE At its monthly meeting at Carterton yesterday, the Wairarapa South County Council struck a general rate for the current year of 1 5-8 d in the £l. Last year the general rate was ljd in the £l. The chairman, Mr Duncan McGregor, presided. It was decided to donate £2 2s to the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade. The treasurer reported a debit balance of £l6B Ils 8d and accounts amounting to £2,333 4s lOd were passed. Receipts since last meeting totalled £2,409 15s 4d. The council decided to advise the Masterton County Council that it agreed with the suggestion that matters relating to the crossing of drains and water courses should be incorporated in the county by-laws, but considered that the method of construction should be left to the discretion of the council. It was decided to support a resolution, forwarded by the Kairanga County Council, deprecating the growing weight of hospital rating. Mi* McGregor was appointed to represent the council on the proposed deputation to the Government on the subject and a suggestion is to be made that the representations to the Government for relief should be made by the executive of the Counties Association, supported by the proposed deputation. It was reported that the council’s contribution towards the cost of the Wellingon Provincial Centennial Court would be £ll4 16s. A grant of £3 3s was made to the fund for the relief of Spanish War refugee children.
