CARTERTON
REST ROOM DANCE. (“Times-Age” Special) The Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held a dance and euchre tournament in the Clareville Hall last Friday evening, the proceeds of which are to go towards a Rest Room in Carterton. There was a large attendance. * The supper was provided by the? Tara-tahi-Clareville members, and a profitable and entertaining evening resulted. The prize winners in the euchre tournament were as follow: —Ladies: Miss Banks, 1; Mrs Morgan, 2; consolation, Mrs M. Hodder. Men: Mr V. Daysh, 1; Mr L. Rayner, 2; consolation, Mr W. Morris. SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. The Presbyterian Sunday School building was the scene of busy activity ' throughout last Friday afternoon and evening. The stalls displayed an attractive variety of goods, and the stallholders did a brisk trade. In the evening games and half hourly concert programmes proved very popular. The takings are in the vicinity of £65, and the organisers have every reason to be pleased with the effort. FAREWELL GATHERING. Carrington residents gathered in large numbers at the Carrington School on Saturday evening to bid farewell to two highly respected residents, Mr and Mrs Thomas Anderson, who have resided in trie district for over 30 years. Mr Anderson has now retired from farming and their future home will be in Hamilton. Mr E. Parke presented Mr and Mrs Anderson with an oak chiming clock, and wished them very much happiness. Mrs B. - Hills, of Wellington, rendered two delightful solos. The remainder of the evening was spent in dancing. BACON FACTORY. The Carterton Bacon factory has changed ownership, Mr W. Candy having sold his interest to Mr B. R. Rayner, of Parkvale. It is Mr Candy’s intention to take up his residence in Wellington. PERSONAL. Mr Todd, of the Carterton Post Office staff, has been transferred to Te Kuiti. His place at'the Carterton office has been taken by. Mr Goodman,, of Christchurch. Mr and Mrs H. Torrey, who have been away on a motor trip to Foxton, Wanganui and other towns, have returned to Carterton. . MINIATURE RIFLES. The weekly shoot of the Carterton Club was held last evening when the following scores were made off the rifle: — Club aggregate and Press Cup:—W. Sewell 100, M. Press 99, G. Goodin 99, F. At the usual meeting of the Druids’ Lodge presided over by Arch Druid Bro D’Arcy Gayfer, there was a good attendance of members, including all officers. Declarations off the sick funds were received from three members. The sick visitors made reports on members still on the funds, most of which were favourable. Sick pay £l9 13s 4d, maternity claim £6, general 6s, a total of £25 19s 4d was passed for payment. The Friendly Societies’ Hospital Association gave notice of a special meeting to be held on August 3. • District President Bro H. Bassett reported on visiting Lodges in the Auck-land-Taranaki districts, also calling on members of Totara Lodge residing in those parts. Grand Lodge forwarded a report of the annual meeting of the executive, which showed a general increase in membership and lodge funds. RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting of the Carterton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the secretary’s office yesterday. There were present: Messrs A. T. Murray (chairman), C. A. Chennells, C. C. Callender, C. Manley, L. T. Harding, H. Rathbone, M. F. King, F. Taplin and D. Gibb Johnston (secretary). An apology for absence was received from Mr G. Rabbits. The secretary reported on the recent ball, which showed a credit balance of £24. The picture night, given by the management of the Tivoli Theatre had realised a profit to the R.S.A. of £6 4s. An invitation was received from the Carterton Savage Club, inviting all members to a special R.S.A. Korero on Saturday, August 20. The invitation was accepted. 4 Votes of thanks were passed to the ladies’ committee, and other helpers at the recent ball, to Mr R. T. Forbes, and the Tivoli Theatre management, for staging the R.S.A. Gala Picture night, and to Miss D. Rabbits for printing and decorating programmes for the ball. The programmes were most at-
tractive and were the admiration of all. The secretary was instructed to write a letter of thanks to the Wairarapa Pipe Band for its help at all R.S.A. functions. It was resolved to make a donation of one guinea to the fund for Highland .uniforms. The committee also decided to make a donation of half a guinea to the Chinese Relief Fund. After discussion, it was decided to hold a ladies’ night, to take the form of a complimentary social and dance to the members of the R.S.A. Ladies’ Committee on Tuesday, August 9.
