HIGHER COSTS
AUCKLAND HOSPITAL OUTLAY. HEAVY INCREASE IN PRICES OF COMMODITIES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 18. Indicative of the general rise in costs throughout industry, an extra £7778 is required by the Auckland Hospital Board this year in comparison with 1935 to supply institutions under its control with seven widelyused commodities. A report from the finance committee to the board showed that the cost of obtaining bacon, bread, slack coal, fish, fowls, meat and X-ray films had advanced by approximately 40 per cent over the past four years. In 1935 the gross cost to the board of obtaining supplies of these articles was £20,765 and in 1936 the amount dropped slightly to £20,322. There was a sharp rise in 1937 to £23,516 and, based on estimated quantities, this year’s requirement will be £28,543. The only line to fall in price was X-ray films, which dropped from £2481 in 1935 to £2lBB in 1938.
