DEFENCE BY WATER

DYKE BREACHED BY CHINESE GUERRILLAS AT DISTANCE OF 20 MILES FROM TIENTSIN. JAPANESE AGAIN CHECKED ON YANGTSE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. PEKING, July 18. In fulfilment of their policy of flooding all Japanese-occupied territory, Chinese guerrillas have destroyed the south dyke of the Yungting River, 20 miles north-west of Tientsin. It is expected, however, that the Japanese will be able to repair the breach before Tientsin is threatened. Heavy rains have caused the Yangtse River to swell again, especially at Kaifeng, where the Japanese advance to Chengchow was previously held up.
