Stock Killings.

The following stock was slaughtered at the Masterton Municipal Abattoir in June: Cattle 502, calves 214, sheep 1418, lambs 155, pigs 123. The killing fees were £44 14s 8d lower than those for June, 1937. To date the fees are £ll4 13s 8d lower than those for the corresponding period of last year. Baptist Self-Denial Appeal. More than £3700 has been raised by the New Zealand Baptist Union in its annual self-denial appeal this year. The sum is about £4OO greater than that raised last year, which then constituted a record. Two-thirds of the amount goes to assist Baptist missionary work in East Bengal, and the rest to home missionary work in New Zealand. Charity' Ball. Members of the Charity Ball Committee have the arrangements for the ball to be held in the Municipal Hall on August 3 well in hand. The decorations committee have been busy preparing for a unique floral - decorative scheme which will be used this year. Messrs B. Iveson, W. C. Orange and J. J. Hunter will act as M’s.C.

Municipal Library. In June the following books were handled by the Masterton Municipal Library: Books issued, fiction 3411, travel, etc. 341; books added, fiction 50, travel, etc. 3. At the end of May the subscribers numbered 390 and at the end of June 399. The amount spent in books from April 1 to May 31 was: Librarian, £9O 7s 6d; committee, £35 6s 2d. Unnumbered Denominations.

Dr Barrer, who- is on a holiday visit to New Zealand, has had a brilliant scholastic and athletic career at Cambridge University. This evening he will take as his subject, “Political Impressions of Modern Europe.” Any young men wishing to attend the tea, which will be held at 5.30 o’clock, are asked to communicate with the secretary of the Y.M.C.A. More Apprentices.

In both the engineering and the carpentering trades there was a marked increase in the number of apprenticeship contracts registered in the Dominion during the year, according-to the report of the Labour Department. Apprentices employed in April of this year, with the figures for the previous year in parentheses, included: —Motor engineering, 1188 (668); engineering. 1006 (581); carpentering, 1028 (604); printing, 690 (556); furniture, 674 (478); electrical, 577 (381); coachbuilding, 433 (285), and plumbing, 418 (299). Indoor Basketball.

Further games in the inter-house basketball competition will be played at the Y.M.C.A. tomorrow night as follows:—6.3o p.m., Faulknor’s v. Reliance, referees, Messrs D. Leete and C. Greagor; 7.10 p.m., Hamill’s v. C. Smith, Ltd., Mr A. E. Bate; Harcombe’s, a bye. All players are requested to be at the gymnasium on time. The position of the teams in the competition is as follows:—Reliance, 4 points; C. Smith, Ltd., 4 points; Faulknor’s, 2 points; Hamill’s, 2 points; Harcombe’s, nil. Chess Championship.

The 11 games that were left unfinished when play ceased in the recent annual 20-board telegraphic match between the Auckland and Wellington Chess Clubs have now been accounted for. Seven games were disposed of by friendly negotiation between the two executives, and the four games regarding which agreement was not reached have been declared draws by the Canterbury members of the New Zealand Adjudication Board, Messrs Hindin, Abbott and Darwin. The final score is therefore: Wellington Chess Club 10A, Auckland Chess Club 91. The present tally in the South Island contest is: Otago Chess Club 12, Canterbury Chess Club 6. As only two outstanding games are being adjudicated on in Auckland, an Otago v. Wellington final is assured. The inter-island final is scheduled to begin at 6.15 p.m. on Saturday.
