“BIT OF IMPERTINENCE”
GRANTING OF TAXI LICENCES BOROUGH COUNCIL RECEIVES LETTER “I think it is a bit of impertinence,” observed the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, at last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, referring to a letter from the Manawatu-Wairarapa Employers’ Association to the effect that as it considered there were sufficient taxis at present licensed in Masterton the council should adopt the policy of not granting any further licences except in the case where an existing taxi-proprietor was giving up business. The association referred to an advertisement stating that another taxi proprietor was starting in business in Masterton. Councillor R. Russell: “What taxidriver’s licence are they referring to?” The Mayor: “I don’t care.” Councillor Russell: “Is it correct that you as Mayor granted a licence pro tern?” Mr Jordan: “It is incorrect.” Mr Jordan added that it would be better for the Association to mind its own business, and leave the council to do the job which it was able to do. On the motion of the Mayor the letter was received.
