MASTERTON DEFEATS HASTINGS KEATS TROPHY CONTEST Last Saturday the Masterton Harrier Club visited Hastings and were successful in winning the Keats Trophy by 23 points to 32. The race was run in showery weather, with occasional glimpses of the sun. After a week of heavy rain, the course was very soft, and was a varied one, embracing all types of crosscountry running. The course was a new one at Havelock North, two miles from Hastings, and started in Te Mata Road and followed partly up the lower- slopes of the Havelock hills, coming out on the Napier Road, and back to the starting point. This circuit was covered twice. The Masterton club deserved its win, as the members ran as a team. The individual honours went to W. Pullar (Masterton), who was closely follow - ■ ed home by H. E. Taylor (Hastings)?
The detailed results are: —Pullar (M), 36,52, 1; Taylor (H), 36,54, 2; Gregory (M), 37.55, 3; Shaw (M), 38.44, 4; Dyer (H), 41.15, 5; Coles (H), 41.46, 6; Long (M), 42.7, 7; Wright (M), 42.10, 8; Taylor (H), 42.15, 9; Manley (H), 43.5, 10. Points: Masterton 23, Hastings 32. After the race the Masterton visitors were entertained at afternoon tea and a dance, while on Sunday morning, they were driven to the Esk Valley to see the flood ..damage. The team returned home yesterday afternoon. The local club’s ' compact team ran its best race to date. The teaming of Gregory (who led for the greater part of the race, and who suffered from a bad “stitch” over the last mile), Shaw and Pullar, was good, and these runners were always in the first four. This trio., always had the backing-up of Wright, Frederickson, and Long, who carried the day for Masterton, all finishing inside the first 11. Roy Shaw ran another good race, and Jim Long gave his best performance this season. Colvin Wright had the misfortune to fall heavily in the latter stages of the race, but he finished very gamely for his place. KIATERE CLUB FIVE MILE OPEN HANDICAP The Kiatere Harrier Club held a five mile open handicap on Saturday, over the club’s championship course. The going was very wet and slippery, and the times returned by the competitors suffered in consequence. However, as the essence of cross-country running is ability to handle any conditions, the race provided a good test. The competitors were started by Mr K. Turnbull who acted as timekeepers in the absence of Mr A. L. Askew. From, the start, J. L. Burns off smin. set a very fast pace, followed by D. Nelson and O. Gaskin. At the end of the first lap, J. L. Burns had 150 yards lead from J. Laing and Alister McDonald, who were running very well. Halfway round the second lap J. Laing overtook J. L. Burns, who was closely followed by Al McDonald, and after a very thrilling finish, J. Laing just squeezed home from Al McDonald. The final results were:—J. Laing (Imin 40sec); 34min 43sec, 1; Al McDonald (Imin 35sec), 34min 45sec, 2; J. L. Burns (smin), 35min 28sec, 3; D. Nelson (3min 25sec), 35min 47sec. 4; W. Burgess (12secs), 36min, 5; W, McDonald (15sec), 36min 25sec, 6; C. Bell (1 min, 40sec), 37sec, 7; B. F. Falloon (Imin 30sec), 37min ssecs, 8. The fastest time was recorded by W. Burgess whose actual time was 31min 12secs, with J. Laing second fastest, his time being 31min 23sec. At the conclusion of the race a trophy was presented to the winner. Next week’s run will be over a course of 6| miles for the “Rewanui Cup.” This trophy, presented by Mr R. Liverton of “Rewanui,” always attracts considerable interest, and this year, with almost every member showing good form, the winner at this stage appears well concealed.
