MOTOR FATALITY

EX-FOOTBALLER KILLED (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Knocked down by a motor-car at the corner of Brooklyn Road and Nairn Street, Wellington, shortly after 7 o’clock on Saturday night, Mr William Samuel (“Dad”) Ridler, a wellknown resident of Wellington, received severe injuries, death being almost instantaneous. Mr Ridler was crossing the road with the intention of calling at a nearby shop when the accident occurred. Mr Ridler was 73 years of age, and was born at Petone. He was educated at Thorndon School and Wellington College. He joined the railways service, retiring in 1924 when he was staff superintendent. He was the first secretary of the Petone Rugby Football Club and a foundation member, as well as being associated With the Athletic Rugby Football Club, since its inception, being a senior player and later an executive official. Mr Ridler, at the time of his death, was president of the Athletic Club, having been club captain for many years. Previously he belonged to the Eastbourne Bowling Club for several seasons and was an active member of the Wellington Bowling Club...'
