WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. KIWI BEAT CARTERTON. Saturday saw the finish of the second round of the Wairarapa Hockey Association’s senior competition. Conditions were ideal at Lansdowne and some very interesting hockey was seen. The Kiwi-Carterton game was the main attraction at Lansdowne and an excellent exhibition of the code was given by both teams, the game being fast and spectacular. Kiwi won by a 6/1 margin, but the score did not indicate the run of play. Goals by D. Leete and H. Worthington gave Kiwi a lead early in the game but Carterton were very unlucky on several occasions in not evening up the score. Halftime was called with Kiwi 2 up. The second spell saw Kiwi forwards clap on the pressure, Leete and Worthington again goaling with good shots. With four goals against them Carterton set out to make up the leeway but found the Kiwi defence very hard to break through. A. Fisher opened the score for Carterton by good following up to goal off a rebound from the goal-keeper’s pads. Carterton kept up their attack for a time but could not push home their advantage. Then Kiwi had Carterton in trouble again. Massey sent in a hot shot from a penalty corner but the goal-keeper saved, only to have Worthington goal from the rebound off his pads. Foster goaled for Kiwi soon after, making the score 6/1. Car terton were going better at this stage but the final whistle went with the score unaltered. Messrs Hard-, ing and Moynahan were the referees. WESLEY v. GREYTOWN. The other senior match played was between Greytown and Wesley and resulted in a win for Wesley by 8/2. WOMEN’S TEST. NARROW WIN FOR ENGLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, July 16. The most exciting game of the English women’s New Zealand tour was played in the second hockey Test at Spriggens Park, Wanganui, today. England won by 4-3 in a game that kept a crowd of 3000 shouting up to the last minute. England won the first Test at Christchurch by 4 goals to 1. It was not a particularly polished display of hockey but for a spirited game, in which the New Zealand team showed great heart, it could not have been bettered. The outstanding player in the New Zealand side was Miss M. McKenzie, Canterbury. She showed great initiative at inside right and almost every New. Zealand attack that reached the English circle came from her speed and ability. Another New Zealand forward who played hockey of international standard was Miss H. McLellan, Wellington. The English team had the better of the game except for the last quarter of the match when New Zealand scored two goals. England showed greater knowledge of hockey and their positional play and their hard-working halves swayed the balance in favour of the touring side.
■ln the early stages of the game the ground was. in fair condition but as play progressed it became churned up. At half time the score was England 3 New Zealand 1. For England goals were scored by Misses O’Donoghue (2) and West (2). The New Zealand goals were scored by Misses S. Aldridge, Sherriff and McKenzie.
EASY WIN FOR INDIANS. SOUTHLAND OUTCLASSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, July 16. The Indian hockey team beat Southland at Rugby Park today by eight goals to nil. The match was played in bright sunshine, and there was no wind. After a hard frost last night the ground was greasy on top. The Indians, who outclassed Southland, were fastxon attack, had wonderful control of the ball, and almost uncanny anticipation, for time after time they caught the ball in mid air on their sticks and deflected it to one of their own players. They played as a team, and no member stuck selfishly to the ball. They exploited the back pass, and even sold a dummy, as a variant to the play. N.Z. CHALLENGE'SHIELD. WIN FOR AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 16. The first New Zealand Challenge Shield hockey match of the season between Auckland and Poverty Bay, resulted in a win for the former by 9 goals to 1. It was Auckland’s nineteenth successive win since it took the shield from Canterbury in 1931. NORDEN CUP. BUSH BEATEN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, July 16. Wanganui had little difficulty in beating Bush’ in a challenge representative men’s hockey match for the Norden Cup at Spriggen’s Park today. Wanganui, the holders of the trophy, had the better of the game throughout, but Bush staged some rugged attacks. The final score was Wanganui 7, Bush 2. The scorers for Wanganui were Fraser (2), E. Wallace (3), and L. Stewart (2). M. Thompson and J. Beals scored for Bush. ——————
