KNOX CHURCH

LADIES’ GUILD. ANNUAL MEETING. The members of Knox Ladies’ Guild held their annual meeting last Wednesday at the residence of Mrs Esau, Cole Street. There was a good attendance despite the unpleasant weather. The secretary presented the annual report and balance sheet. The report showed that the Guild had completed another year of useful work. A satisfactory feature was the number of new members gained during the year. The Rev J. Davie said that the Guild existed primarily as a social organisation and it was a sphere of its social activities, rather than its financial achievement that its success was to be reckoned. The balance-sheet showed that a substantial amount was in hand. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mrs G. W.-Mor-ice; vice-presidents, Mesdames Davie, Ractliffe, Henderson, McGregor, Shearer, Thompson and Miss L. McGregor; visiting committee, Mesdames Taylor (convenor), Burling, Malmo, Aplin, Gaskin and Tooby; entertainment committee, Mesdames Traynor (convenor), Hulme, Dickie, Masters and Misses Ross and Butement; secretary and treasurer, Mrs J. Kitchener. The secretary was asked to write to Mrs W. A. Burling, Lansdowne, expressing the Guild’s sympathy with her in her illness. Miss Wilson offered to take charge of the “Bring and Buy” stall in August. Miss L. McGregor consented to represent the Guild on the local committee that is to ,be set up in connection with the Pan-Pacific Conference in 1940. A letter was received from the W.C.T.U. inviting members to a meeting on August 4 to hear Mrs H. Paterson, of Pahiatu'a, thevice -president of the New Zealand W.J.T.U. At the conclusion of the business the members listened to a very interesting talk by Miss Marjorie McGregor, who spoke of a day spent in London and a visit to Winchester Cathedral. After afternoon tea had been served the Rev J. Davie moved votes of ' thanks to Mrs Esau and to Miss McGregor which were carried by acclamation.
