OBITUARY

HON. H. A. RUSSELL, M.L.C. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, July 14. The death occurred suddenly at his home, little Flaxmere, tonight, of the Hon H. A. Russell, M.L.C. One of Hawke’s Bay’s most prominent pastoralists and sportsmen, his interests and activities extended over a wide field. He was appointed to the Legislative Council on June 22, 1934. He was the son of Captain Sir William Russell, K. 8., who, after coming to New Zealand with his regiment, the 56th, took up Flaxmere and other grazing properties in Hawke’s Bay. The late Mr Russell received his education at Bradfield College, England, and at Lincoln Agricultural College, Canterbury. He began his career on his father’s station, Sherenden, and later managed this property. From 1908 to 1918’ he farmed property at Puketapu before moving to Flaxmere. He also owned Apley station, a property situated on the Mangaone River, where he specialised in Black Poll cattle. At Little Flaxmere he established a stud of- thoroughbred horses,, breeding, among others, Tigritiya; Corazon, Belles of Shandon and Nadador, one of New Zealand's greatest steeplechasers. He took a keen interest in breeding horses for remount purposes and was a member of the Hawke’s Bay committee of three appointed to advise the Government on the best means of increasing the number of horses suitable for this purpose. A keen polo player in his earlier days, Mr Russell started the Hawke's Bay Polo Club in 1892, being president in 1918.

Mr Russell leaves two sons, Messrs William Nelson Russell, Dannevirke, and Robert Nelson Russell, West Australia, and three daughters, Mrs H. B. C. Holmes. Andover, England, and Misses Molly and Shirley Russell, who lived with their father. He married in 1897 Miss Eva Nelson, who died three years ago. Major-General Sir Andrew Russell, Hawke’s Bay, is • a cousin.
