ACCUSED SENT TO GAOL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, July 14. “This is a type of confidence trick that is becoming rather prevalent in New Zealand and Australia,” said Chief-Detective Young in thf Magistrate’s Court when Maurice O’Connor, aged 31, admitted obtaining £2O from Charles Alton Morton by a false pretence. Jointly charged with O’Connor was John Alexandra O’Donnell,' aged 25, who elected to be tried by a jury. A detective stated that O'Connor and O’Donnell made the acquaintance of complainant, a storekeeper, through a perfectly innocent party and represented to him that they were agents of. a well-known firm of English confectioners. They said they had in bond a stock of considerable value, a statement that was false and fraudulent, and induced him to hand over £2O for the supposed purpose of having the goods released. O’Connor was • sentenced to four months’ imprisonment.
