A thriving but little-known trade, which has its base at the London docks, is the importation of tortoises into England. For some years cargoes of live tortoises have been arriving at the docks from Casablanca, in Morocco, and as many as 600 crates comprise a consignment, each crate containing from 60 to 80 tortoises. They used to be shipped in barrels, but the mortality was so high that crates came into use, and only a limited number is put into each crate. The tortoises are shipped in a corhatose condition, but they appear to be quite awake when they reach the London docks. The majority are consigned to live stock dealers and chain stores.
