ODD FELLOWS’ LODGE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Bro, R. J. Fisher presided over a fair attendance of members at the usual meeting of the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U. Correspondence was received from the Wellington District Secretary in regard to the National Health Insurance and endorsing circulars. The Grand Secretary of the New Zealand branch wrote in reference to the increased funeral benefit of deceased member. Three members were declared on the sick funds of the lodge and three declared off. Progress certificates were received relative to members still receiving sick benefits. The Registrar of Friendly Societies notified the appointment of Bro. W. L. Knutson as a trustee of the lodge, in lieu of Bro. Edward Eagle resigned. It was resolved that Sister Mellish be advanced to the Purple Degree at the annual meeting of the Past Grands’ Lodge in Carterton on July 28. A letter of thanks was received from Mrs J. McAllister and family relative to the letter of sympathy forwarded by the lodge on the death of the late Bro. J. McAllister. Several members notified their intention to take part in the football match in conjunction with Masterton Lodge at Dannevirke next Saturday. The match will be the annual one for the Quigley Shield. Sick pay amounting to £l5 3s 4d was passed for payment. It is some years since a poultry show was held in Carterton, and this week’s exhibition which will take place on Thursday and Friday promises to be an unqualified success. Large entries have been received and birds from many poultry farms both in the Wairarapa and outside districts will be competing. PLUNKET SOCIETY. .The monthly meeting of the local branch of the Plunket Society was held on Monday, there being present Mesdames W. Candy, C. C. Callender, H. B. Keenan, E. Dyer, A. Philpotts, V. L. Robinson, H. M. Trapp, and Mrs Everett from the Greytown subbranch. Apologies were received from • Mesdames W. J. Wells and J. Steel. The nurse’s report for June was: — New cases, 2; naturally fed, 1; artificially fed, 1; visits to homes, new cases, 4; old cases, 74; visits to rooms, adults 116, babies 99, older children 36; test scales lent 6 times; telephone calls, 14; car mileage, 429 miles. The secretary reported . that Nurse Stevenson will leave for Hawera on July 15 and Nurse Goodall had taken her place. The committee and the mothers of the district had farewelled Mrs Stevenson before her departure. - The secretary reported having received from the Carterton Amateur Comedy and Dramatic Society the sum «?f £5 6s Id, being the profit from the performance of “Who Are They?” Warm appreciation of the Society’s donation was expressed. METHODIST CIRCUIT. The Rev H. White presided over the quarterly meeting of the Carterton Methodist Circuit on Monday evening. The balance sheet showed that the credit balance had slightly diminished, but that successful efforts had been made to assist the Carterton Trust and Dr Rutter’s Equipment Fund. Already a good sum had been received for the Foreign Mission Funds, and Mrs Tucker was appointed to supervise the canvass for further subscriptions. The meeting expressed its pleasure at the condition of the parsonage consequent on recent repairs and painting. The ladies of the church were congratulated on the success of their “Bring and Buy” afternoons. , Permission was given to hold the Silver Tree Social on Wednesday, July 20. Efforts are to be made to enrol further contributors by the Envelope System. The Rev F. J. Parker, minister of the Masterton Church, will launch this year’s effort for the Home Mission Fund, about the middle of September. Miss E. Brassell was appointed Circuit Home Mission Secretary. Thanksgiving Service to be held in the Carterton Church on the afternoon of July 31, to which members of the church are invited. It was decided to hold a further meeting on July 26 to discuss specially the spiritual welfare of the church. A letter from the. Rev T. A.' Pybus, minister of the Port Chalmers Church, asked that a retiring collection authorised by Conference should be taken up to help build a Centenary Memorial Church at Otakou, where the first Christian Mission in the South Island was established in 1840 by the Rev James Watkin. It was recalled that Mr Pybus before entering the ministry used to ride on horseback from Masterton to preach in the various churches of the circuit, and the meeting agreed to his request. A vote of sympathy was passed with the parents and family of Wembley Goodin, and also with Mrs Henry Lorenzen, who is an inmate of the Greytown Hospital. A NOTED FOOTBALL FAMILY. The McKenzie family of footballers will figure prominently in the Hawke’s Bay-Wairarapa match at Masterton on Saturday. Mr E. McKenzie, Carterton, is the selector of the Wairarapa team; Mr N. McKenzie, Napier, selected the Hawke’s Bay team; Mr H. J. McKenzie, Carterton, is the referee appointed to control the match; and Mr S. McKenzie, a son of Mr N. McKenzie, is a member of the Hawke’s Bay team. Another member of this noted football family, Jack McKenzie, who was a Wairarapa representative for many years, still resides in Carterton, while “Offside Bill” McKenzie,.many times an All Black, has been for a long period of years a resident of Melbourne. Bert McKenzie was probably the best line-out forward ever Wairarapa has seen. ROAD SAFETY Traffic Inspector Milne of Masterton gave an interesting lecture on “Road Safety” to the primary pupils of. the Carterton School yesterday. The speaker was accorded an attentive hearing by his young audience. A handbag containing a sum of money is advertised as lost, and a reward is offered for its recovery.
