OBITUARY
MR WILLIAM WATSON. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. The death occurred in a Wellington private hospital last night of Mr William Watson, a director of the Bank of New Zealand and one of the most prominent figures in the history of New Zealand banking. Mr Watson, who was in his 92nd year, recently underwent an operation. He had been associated with the Bank of New Zealand for nearly 44 years and was president for- four years when the head office was first brought to Wellington in 1894. Later he became one of the shareholders’ representatives on the board of directors when the constitution of the bank was altered on January 1,- 1899, and held office without interruption up to the time of his death. Mr Watson came to New Zealand in 1886, being appointed chief inspector of the Colonial Bank of New Zealand, and settling in Dunedin. From 1931 to 1932 he was chairman of the Bank of New Zealand. Mr Watson leaves one daughter and four sons.
