MAORI CHILD’S DEATH
EVIDENCE AT THE INQUEST-
An inquest was held at Okautete, Homewood, yesterday, by the District Coroner, Mr E. G. Eton, concerning the death of a three-year-old Maori child, Eria Morris, which occurred on Sunday night. A verdict was returned of death from natural causes, probably caused by heart failure after severe convulsions.
The evidence showed that the child had enjoyed good health until it had contracted measles about 10 days ago. The parents had given it every attention while it was suffering from the measles, but when it had a convulsion, the mother became alarmed and brought the child .along to the schoolmaster.
David William Dunwoodie, headmaster of the Okautete Native School, who resides opposite Morris’s house said that the first intimation he had that the child was ill was on Sunday, when he was attending a native meeting about a mile from Morris’s house. Mrs Morris came along the road carrying the sick child. He placed them both in his car and took them to their home. He did all he could to help the mother in caring for the child, which died after having convulsions. He had intended to call a doctor as soon as he could, but the child died before he had the opportunity.
