That the necessity of a medical practitioner for Pdhgaroa and surrounding district was far more urgent than was generally supposed was the opinion of the secretary (Mr Douglas McDonald) of the Pongaroa Farmers’ Union, who said at the monthly meeting of the Union that he was firmly convinced that lives had been lost that could otherwise have been saved if a doctor had been on the spot. He thought that the Wairarapa Board should do more for the Pongaroa district, considering that the levy from the Akitio County this year amounted to £1774, as against £959 three or four years ago. Too much money, he considered, was being spent on palatial buildings in the centres of population, while the back country people were being neglected. It was eventually decided to authorise the secretary to call a public meeting in Pongaroa to further discuss and encourage public interest in the matter.
