EKETAHUNA

BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the local branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society was held in the Methodist Schoolroom. A cheery fire and a cup of tea dispensed by the committee helped to dispel all thoughts of the very wintry day that prevailed. The Rev. R. P. Keal was in the chair, and an appropriate hymn for the occasion was sung “Oh for a Thousand Tongues to Sing.” After scripture reading and prayer the secretary (Mrs J. H. Baillie) stated that the sum of £l2 5s 9d had been forwarded last year to the Bible House in Wellington. This was due to the very faithful work by the collectors. It was regretted that many of the country collectors were not able to be present, and at the suggestion of Mr Keal it was decided that next year the meeting should be held on a day suitable to them. Appreciation of their work was expressed by many of those present. Miss Fawcett spoke of the willingness of many to continue again this year.

Mr Keal, in welcoming Miss Fawcett, paid a fine tribute to the work of the British and Foreign Bible Society, and said that it had always been a pleasure to him in other parts of the Dominion to be associated with the organisers and the work. Miss Fawcett spoke of Dr. Temple’s visit, as the Bible Society’s representative to China, where he had met outstanding Chinese Christians whose love for God was as great as any he had met with in Western lands. Another collector was added to the ranks.

The election of officers was as follows:—President, -Mrs Bruce McLellan; vice-presidents, Mesdames J. F. Baillie, L. Ives, Fox and Keal; committee, Mesdames Gallagher, Carter and Macky; secretary and treasurer, Mrs J. H. Baillie; collectors, Alfredton, Mrs Rolls; Kakariki, Mrs B. H. Sparks; Hukanui, Miss Twentyman; Nireaha, Mr Ray Lawrence; Rongomai, Miss Thompson; Rongokokako, Mrs S. Smith and Miss E. Sigvertsen; Kaiparoro, Mrs Burton; Eketahuna, Mesdames McLellan, Gallagher, Carter and Smith.

The collecting will be undertaken this month.
