GENERAL STRIKE

OPPOSED BY RAILWAYMEN IN QUEENSLAND. ARBITRATION COURT ACTION PREFERRED. BRISBANE, July 11. Railway unionists yesterday discussed the proposal for a general strike. They expressed strong opposition to that course, and it is now believed the three main railway unions which advocated a hold-up will obey the majority and allow the Arbitration Court to redress their grievances. A message from Brisbane on Saturday stated that a serious railway strike was threatened in Queensland owing to the intention of the Minister of Railways to impose fines on three railwaymen for attending a stopwork meeting. A vote was taken on Sunday to decide whether a general strike should be precipitated. This would probably involve New South Wales. A large percentage of railway employees in Queensland were said to be opposed to direct action.
