THE RUGBY GAME
WAIRARAPA COMPETITION MATCHES
KEEN CONTEST AT MEMORIAL ( PARK. ’ CARTERTON BEAT OLD BOYS. , The Wairarapa Rugby Union’s competition matches were continued on , Saturday on heavy grounds. Patrons at Memorial Park were well catered for, two first-class games being witnessed. After looking to be a wellbeaten team, Carterton saw the distance out better and got up in time to defeat Old Boys 12 —9. On No. 2 ground, Masterton and Greytown staged a strenuous contest, Greytown eventually winning 9 —3. Martinborough forfeited to Red Star. RESULTS AT A GLANCE. Senior. Carterton 12, Old Boys 9. Greytown 9, Masterton 3. Red Star beat Martinborough by default. Junior. Red Star 6, Masterton 6, Old Boys 16, Opaki 8. Third Grade. Red Star 44, Dalefield 3. Old Boys 5, Masterton 0.
t SPEEDY BACKS. ’ OLD BOYS IN GOOD FORM. f After dominating play for nearly ' two-thirds of the game, Old Boys went t. under to Carterton 12—9. Securing the i ball from 75 per cent of the scrums, the ; Old Boys backs played bright foot- > ball and only sterling defence kept 1, them from putting on a much larger ■ score. Towards the close of the second ; spell, however, Old Boys, both back . and forward, tired badly and Carterton made a good recovery to pull the game out of the fire. A feature of the game was the brilliant display given by Hatton, the Old Boys five-eighth. Time and again he cut holes in the Carterton defence and it was unfortunate that on several occasions he lacked support. Carterton held a slight advantage throughout in the forwards but even so they were consistently beaten for the ball. The Old Boys backs were the cleverer and more polished combination, although individually the Carterton backs played well. The spell was well advanced when McCalmorit opened Old Boys account with a nice try from a swift back rush. O’Callaghan missed the kick. Just before the interval Loader landed a penalty for Carterton. Fortunes fluctuated in the opening stages of the second spell but Carterton took the lead when Reading scored after determined solo effort. Crawley missed the : kick. Old Boys retaliated hotly and ' Denbee made the honours easy when’ . he won a race for possession over the line. O’Callaghan missed the kick, j Then Hatton came to light with a brilliant effort that culminated in himself ( scoring after four other backs had handled. O’Callaghan missed the kick. ( The dying stages of the spell saw Car- j terton playing improved football and . they again took the lead when Reading j capped a passing rush with a • try. A draw looked likely until, right on time, j Loader went through a gap to score an c
unconverted try and give Carterton victory, 12—9. Mr H. J. McKenzie.was the referee. KEEN CONTEST. GREYTOWN BEAT MASTERTON. Masterton put up a gallant fight against Greytown and with any sort of luck might have come out on top. The Masterton forwards played splendidly throughout but their backs had no effective counter for the speed and combination of the Greytown rearguard. Time and again Masterton had Greytown penned on their line but they lacked the finish 'necessary to successfully thrust home their advantage. The first spell was sternly contested and at the interval Greytown led 3—o, Brunton kicking a penalty goal. Masterton held the upper hand in the opening stages of the second spell but the speedy Greytown backs at all times represented danger. S. Brunton consolidated Greytown’s position when he raced across for an unconverted try. Then Reiri scored a clever try for Masterton. Near the close of the game Greytown were rewarded with another try scored by S. Brunton. Mr W. Grantham was the referee.
