HARRIER ACTIVITIES

MASTERTON CLUB FIVE MILE RACE WON BY CARLE . The Masterton Harrier Club held a five-mile handicap on Saturday afternoon ovei- the five-mile- championship course, which for about three-quarters of the journey was very sloppy, making conditions for those running in rubber-soled shoes decidedly trying. Very good performances were registered by Carle (first), Gregory (second), and Haise (third), who were the placegetters. The finish staged by these three runners was the subject of much comment. Carle was responsible for a good performance. and he was in front of the field for the greater part of the second lap. His finishing sprint was a really good one. In Carle the club has the makings of a good cross country runner. if he would train regularly. Gregory’s effort was especially good for. on entering the Oval with about 300 yards to go, he was giving Carle and Haise about 40 yards, and with a fine sprint he managed to get up to second place. Haise's effort was another really good one, being the result of consistent training. His progress over the last month has been a gradual one, and he will be heard of again before the season closes. The fastest time op Saturday was registered by the scratch man G. Gregory (29.11). Next Saturday, while the club’s team is at Hastings, a junior sealed handicap will be held from the Oval. KIATERE CLUB RUN AT FEATHERSTON On Saturday, members and supporters of the Kiatere Harrier Club journeyed to Featherston for a run sponsored by Messrs H. Scrimshaw and J. Carter. The course which was the best the members have run over to date, was laid by H. Scrimshaw and W. Burns; it was a one-lap course of 61 miles, over rolling hills, with stretches of road at intervals. Seventeen competitors, including Ray Benton and H. Scrimshaw of Featherston, faced the starter, Mr J. McDonald. The following was the result: —• R. Greeks, 40min 42sec, 1; W. Burns, 40 min. 41sec, 2; W. Burgess, 41min 45 sec, 3; W. McDonald, 42min, 4; R. Searancke. 42min 25sec, 5; A. Burns, 43min 7sec, 6; L. Francis. 45min lOsec, 7; C. Bell, 45min 12sec, 8; B. F. Francis second, the trophies being a beautiful hand-made wooden vase for first, and a crystal vase for second prize, R. Scarancke's win was the most popular this season, as this runner has shown remarkable determination in each run, and thoroughly deserves his win. L. Francis followed up his success of last Saturday, and is showing improvement with every run. The detailed results of the sealedhandicap are as follows:—R. Searancke (3min 15secs), 1; L. Scrimshaw and A. Burns (club captain). Hearty votes of thanks were passed for the following: —Mr and Mrs Bonas. for allowing their home to be used for changing: Mr J. C.
