CONSISTENT SHINING HOURS

(By

“The Cynic.”)

Prior to her sequence of four wins Shining Hours had had only three races. She is a three-year-old brown daughter of Arausio and the Leighton —Los Vegas mare Sunny Hours, a halfsister to Athens 11, Fluency, Quixotic, Passion Fruit, and Passion Flower, and she is herself a full-sister to Karl, who was a good juvenile, and a half-sister to the useful Sergia. It is one of the best of the old Flaxmere families. Shining Hours is being raced on lease from her breeder, Mr F. Ormond, by Mr C. McCullough, owner also of Flammarion, and who does his own training at Woodville.

.increase of £7,417. The total for the three days was £177,514 10s, as against £161,818, an increase of £15,696 10s. There were several falls during the jumping races, but no casualties. Results: —

King Mestor, a Trentham winner, resumed racing only a couple of months ago after having been off the scene for nearly two years. When raced by the late Mr W. Garrett he was a winner of two or three hurdles on northern courses, and at that time he was considered to hold considerable promise at the game. He is now being raced and trained by Mr M. L. Campbell, of Taumarunul, and he has worked his way into winning form in his races, as in his first few starts this winter he made no showing whatever. He was second at Marton, which was evidence that he was on the improve. Now seven ’ years old, King Mestor is a bay gelding by King Lu from the Australian-bred Polymestor — Peruna mare Lady Mestor. He was bred by Mr R. B. Hines, and when raced by the late Mr Garrett he was only leased. It is interesting to note that he claims engagements in all the big jumping races at Riccarton, steeplechases as well as-hurdles.

Lustral and Matoru were purchased together from Mrs D. Levin by Mr T. Fisher, of Upper Hutt, and the Trentham trainer T. R. George, only six weeks ago for a price understood to be round about £5OO, including contingencies, and Lustral’s share of the joint cost was a good deal more than that given for Matoru, as it is considered that he has bright future prospects as a jumper. Thursday was his first win in four starts in his new colours, and he and Matoru have now more than paid the outlay to secure them both.

Winter Hurdles Handicap, 2Jm.: 4/3, Courtyard, 10.2 (G. Ridgway), 1; 1/1, Full of Scotch, 10.11 (A. Jenkins), 2; 7/7, Aurora’s Love, 9.2 (C. Thomson), 3. Also started: 2/2, Erination; 6/6, Donegal; 3/4, Charade; 9/9, Chaste; 10/10, Middle; 8/8, Southern Blood; 5/5, Spender. Five lengths; length. Erination was fourth. Time, 4.56 a. Winter Oats Handicap, Im.: 6/5. Monipere, 7.11 (G. Humphries), 1; 13/13, Liane. 7.8 (A. E. Bennett), 2; 1/1, Ned Cuttie, 8.7 (P. Burgess), 3. Enge was fourth. Time, 1.57 J. Onslow Handicap, 6f.: 3/2,. Rebel Mate, 9.1 (B. H. Morris), 1; 2/3, Rollicker, 9.3 (W. J. Broughton), 2; 1/1, Prince Acre, 9.6 (J. Winder), 3. Also started: 10/12, Paper Slipper; 9/11, De Friend; 11/8, Mittie; 12/9, Pukeko; 8/10, Triune; 6/6, Farland; 4/5, _ Maori Song; 7/7, Superior Guard; 5/4, Thala. Neck; two lengths and a half. Thala was fourth. Time, 1.22 J. Kia Ora Handicap, Im.: 1/1, El Meynell, 8.13 (C. G. Goulsbro), 1; 3/3, Rotoma, 9.4 (A. Jenkins), 2; 4/5, Warehi, 8.3 (W. J. Broughton), 3. Also started: 9/10, Happy Landing; 11/11, Hamarin; 2/2, Sunbeam; 7/7, Great Bramble; 6/6, Tidewaiter; 5/4, Auto Sweep; 12/12, Raroa; 10/9, Revival; 8/8, Silver Fox. Four lengths; half a neck. Tidewaiter was fourth. Time, 1.581.

Lustral is only a young horse yet, being a four-year-old gelding by Tidal from the Lord Quex —Asterina mare Asterism, a half-sister to the useful Asturisca and the dam also of the promising steeplechaser Power Chief. He was bred by Mr G. D. Beatson. He has the distinction of having started more times this season than any other horse, and he has won five of his races.

Valarth is a well-bred six-year-old bay gelding by Valkyrian from the Tractor—Take Down mare Dismantle, thus being a fuii-brother to the useful Dissemble. It is a proved jumping family, as Dismantle is a full-sister to Overhaul, a good winner over hurdles and a victor in' the Winter Hurdles at Trentham, and also a halfsister to Master Anomaly, who won over hurdles prior to his recent untimely death. Valarth is owned by Mr E. N. Didham, of Dunedin, for whom he is trained by his son, the jockey-trainer A. E. Didham.

The Wrecker is a well-bred four-year-old bay gelding by Shambles from the Australian-bred Bardolph mare Brayton, hence he is a half-bro-ther to Bonnetter, Royal Box, Tarleton, Mervette, and Historic, all good performers and most of them at their best‘on heavy ground. In earlier races he has usually been running on at the end of shorter journeys, so it looks as if all he required was a longer journey. It will be recalled that Historic was not of much account till he was four. The Wrecker is a well-made gelding, and he is owned by his trainer, F. D. Jones, who will probably be taking him to Sydney in the spring.

No line on the progress Lady Callaghan has made was obtainable at Marton on Saturday as she was brought down by Night Hero at the first fence. Lady Callaghan created a good impression when she made her first appearance in a hunters’ event at Wanganui, giving a fine display of jumping. She has thickened out since then and looks the type to develop into a good cross-country performer.

E. J. Nielson, who scored his first training success when Flying Acre won at Otaki, took another trick with Miss Waitarere, a Danilof two-year-old, in the maiden race at Marton on Saturday. Both horses are raced by Mr T. Jones, of Levin. WELLINGTON RACES FINAL DAY RESULTS. WINTER HURDLES TO COURTYARD (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 10.
