W.C.T.U.
“WHITE RIBBON DAY.” “White Ribbon Day” was observed at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union which was held in the Methodist Hall on Thursday last. Mrs Speight presided over a good attendance of members and friends, .visitors and old members being specially welcomed. The devotional period was led by Mesdames Sims, Willoughby and McGregor. Very favourable reports on the “Y” Rally and the No-License League meeting were given by Mrs N. Miller. Correspondence dealing with PanPacific Peace activities was discussed. Miss S. Tankersley was elected to represent the W.C.T.U. on the local-com-mittee. Arrangements were finalised for the visit in the near future of Mrs H. Paterson, of Pahiatua, vice-president for the N.Z.W.C.T.U. Campaign work was then dealt with, and literature handed to members for distribution. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Jansen and Coddington, who were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A much appreciated play reading entitled “Utopia Celebrates White Ribbon Day” was given by four members. The Temperance fact, supplied by Mrs Speight, was a statement made by Professor Mitchmikoff of the Pasteur Institute, Paris, as follows: “Alcohol is not a stimulant or a tonic in any sense of the world. It is a depressing agent, an anaesthetic, a narcotic. Alcohol has a harmful action on the phagocytes, the agents of natural defence against infective microbes.”
The meeting terminated with the pronouncing of the Benediction.
