COUNTY AFFAIRS
MEETING OF MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL BRIDGE AT MANGAMAHOE The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held on Saturday. There were present Councillors E. W. Cheetham (chairman), R. Judd, D. Bennett, C. Welch, A. Forsberg and A. Gray. The treasurer reported a debit balance of £1704 7s Id. Accounts were passed amounting to £521 8s lid. The treasurer reported that a certain amount of arrears of rates had been cancelled by the Mortgage Adjustment Commission. The chairman reported that he had conferred with the Government road engineer and the county engineer regarding the condition of a bridge at Mangamahoe on Hiighway 443, and it had been considered imperative that a new bridge should be constructed as soon as possible. He had, therefore, written to the Main Highways Board requesting that a special grant be provided this year towards the cost of such bridge and the county engineer had prepared plans to be submitted to the board. The action of the chairman was approved, and the clerk was directed to take the necessary preliminary steps for the purpose of raising the requisite bridge loan. The secretary of the Wellington Provincial Centennial Committee requested the co-operation of the county with that of other local bodies in the arranging of zones suggested for the purposes of the centennial celebration, and discussing the provision of memorials. It was decided that the council would co-operate in every way possible, and agreed to take 15 copies of the memorial book which it is proposed to issue. The Spanish Refugee Relief Fund committee forwarded subscription lists with a request that the council would endeavour to collect donations. The clerk was directed to place a list in his Masterton office. The Kairanga County Council wrote in regard to a proposed deputation to the Government upon the question of hospital finance and requested the ( council to appoint a representative. Councillor Forsberg was appointed to represent the council upon such deputation. It was decided to employ one more man under scheme No. 13, at the request of the Labour Office. The overseer reported satisfactory progress of work and prospective work was discussed and arranged for. It was decided that the future meeting of the council be held on the second Monday in each month instead of Saturday.
