TOO MUCH PROTECTION

CHARGES OF £6 ON FLUID COSTING 4s. PROPOSED IMPORTATION ABANDONED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Frosty weather induced a Christchurch importer of motor accessories to order a trial shipments of radiator anti-freeze solution from America, but the experiment was abandoned when it was found that Customs duty on 96 cents worth of fluid would amount to approximately £6. A catalogue of the manufacturers stated that the fluid was a concentrated methanol, one gallon of it equalling five quarts of denatured -alcohol. When Customs officials had examined the liquid, the importer was informed that it would have to be broken down under official supervision, the charges and taxes being £6. Ninetysix cents worth of the fluid has therefore been left with the Customs Department, to dispose of as it feels inclined.
