NEGRO DEBATERS

COMING VISIT TO MASTERTON. Arrangements for the visit of the American Negro debating team from Le Moyne College, Tennessee, on July 21, are proceeding apace. On arrival from Wellington by private car, the debaters will be entertained at lunch by the local Rotary Club before proceeding to Wairarapa College to address the combined pupils of the college and other secondary schools. The Principal of the college (Mr G. G. Hancox) has arranged for the visitors to be met at the Hostel, and thence escorted by the Pipe Band to the Assembly Hall, where they will be accorded a civic reception by the Mayor of Masterton, Mr T. Jordan, prior to the function. In the evening a debate will be held in the Opera House against a Masterton team on the subject: “That World Peace is Undesirable as Well as Impossible,” the affirmative being taken by the visitors. Messrs J. H. Kemnitz and J. Dwyer have been selected to represent Masterton, and should prove worthy opponents. In addition to the main debate, a series of three short impromptu speeches will be presented, while a formal Maori haka of welcome and of challenge is to be staged by the Te Ore Maori party. A canoe dance with pois will conclude what should be a most interesting evening. During their stay the debaters will be the guests of Dr and Mrs N. H. Prior.
