SPANISH CHILDREN
FUND TO RELIEVE DISTRESS. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, has received a request from the committee for the National Relief Fund for Spanish Refugee Children, set up under the auspices of the Mayor of Wellington, to open a fund for the benefit of destitute children in Spain. According to the covering letter it is stated that there are 55,000 orphans in Spain and the number is increasing at the rate of 70 a day. The great need is warm clothing and food. New Zealand is aiming at raising a sum of £lO,OOO. The fund will be administered by the New Zealand High Commissioner and where practicable it is intended to purchase food and clothing in New Zealand. Anyone wishing to make donations may do so by sending same to the Mayor (Mr Jordan) and the “Wairarapa Times-Age.” All donations will be acknowledged in the Press.
