BRILLIANT YOUNGSTERS
(By
“The Cynic.”)
The Wrecker, the winner of the Te Aro Handicap at Trentham, and the last horse on the card, is a half-bro-ther to Royal Box, Tarleton, Mervette and Historic. His dam, Brayton, was 21 years old when he was foaled. The Wrecker was favourite for the Maiden Stakes at Ashburton on June 25, but he finished a bad fifth. Tuesday’s race was his ninth, and it was the first time he had been in the money.
Although the brilliant Te Hero overshadowed all other youngsters in Auckland this season, there are others who may reach a goqd standard as three-year-olds.
Takanini trainers hold a strong hand in this division with Hot Box, Arvakur, Royevrus, Valimeen and Pocket Venus all of whom showed good form during the season. Two of these, Royevrus and Valimeen came out comparatively late and, although they did not win often, 'they showed fine speed and both are confidently expected to do much better as three-year-olds.
Informer, who contested the Maiden Plate at Marton, was a gift to Mr G. R. Grace, owner of Clarion Call, and was then making his first appearance from 1.. G. Morris’ stable. Informer is unfashionably but interestingly bred. He is by Intruder, by Trespasser from Graciosa and half-brother to Might and Boomerang. Intruder was a complete failure on the turf. Battle Eve. the sire of Informer’s dam. beat Desert Gold in the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes, but his subsequent performances, although they included a number of wins, were not up to that early promise. Battle Eve was full-brothei to Equipment, the dam of Cricket Bat and others.
Since joining C. Morse’s team at Takanini, Royal Mimic has been kept going without being overtaxed. He is engaged in the steeplechase at Matamata where the flat country will suit him. He was up in front when he fell at the last fence in his last engagement’ at Ellersjie.
Among- the entrants at Matamata is the tHree-year-old Penzance by Race-ful-Lady Lois. This filly was placed in her first, two engagements as a two-year-old, but went off the scene a little later. There is no doubt about her speed and her reappearance will be awaited with interest.
A follower of the Birchwood hounds is Lochcorrib, a four-year-old sister to Shillelagh Wood, who finished second in last year’s Grand Rational Steeplechase, and half-sister to Bally Brit, one of the best young steeplechasers produced this season. Lochcorrib is a good type of mare, and she, like Shillelagh Wood and Bally Brit, will carry the colours of her breeder, Mr M. Hanley.
P. T. Hogan has booked accommodation for Queen of Song, Top Row and company for Australia at the beginning of next month.
Garonne, who displayed considerable promise when he won the trial event at Ashburton, cost Mr H. D. Greenwood 225 guineas as a yearling He is related- to Normandy, a smart three-year-old trained by G. Price in Sydney for Mr E. J. Watt. Normandy is by Gascony from Auratum (daughter of Desert Gold); Garonne also is by Gascony, from Orozino, whose dam is a sister to Desert Gold. Garonne is a half-brother to a Wellington Cup winner. Grand Jury.
Dark Legion is the name given the rising two-year-old by Dark Fox-Our Legion who was purchased at the Sydney sales by Mr A. D. Potter. Dark Legion looks very well and is already doing steady work on the two-year-old track at Ellerslie.
A young horse, who' is. making steady progress at Ellerslie is Talak. A two-year-old by Vaals-Thurence, he has given his trainer some encouragement in his sprinting tasks, although he has not yet been seriously tried.
Since resuming work, Stretto has trained on nicely. She seems to have settled down with age and is now doing her work in sedate style. She is in splendid health and should not be long in striking form when sent along in earnest after her arrival in Australia.
The two-year-old Veritable, is now a regular member of R. S. Eagby’s string. By Sunflare-Titaness, Veritable has already shown speed and he may be on hand for a maiden race early in the new season.
Although his form fell away at the end of his three-year-old career, Trilliarch now looks bright and well and he may strike his best early in the new season. He is now a regular worker under. W. J. McLean’s charge at Ellerslie.
In the spring the year before last, Matoru, winner of the Stewards’ Handicap on Tuesday, then trained at Riccarton.'came up to Trentham and won a hack double. He was transferred to Trentham at the beginning of the present season after a fairly lengthy spell, and his two wins during the last few days have been his first since that double nearly two years ago. For some time he suffered with a back ailment that could not be satisfactorily diagnosed, and it is only recently that he has thrown off signs of this trouble. A little over a month ago he was purchased by Messrs T. Fisher, of Upper Hutt, and the Trentham trainer T. R. George, along with Lustral, after having disappointed his former owner on the Nelson-Marlborough circuit, and he has won at his two first starts in his new colours. It is interesting to note that he was not rehandicapped for his Marton success. Matoru, now five years old, is a bay gelding by Acre from the Quin Abbey —Lady Gwen mare Katuscha, a halfsister to Lady Penury (dam of Mintage and Rosshire) and also of Lady Ridicule, a fine performer a decade ago in the north under solid weights. Bred by Mr R. Hannon, whose colours he first carried, he was secured by Mrs D. Levin, of Wellington, a couple of years ago, but he was resold after the recent Marlborough meeting. He has now won eight races in 32 starts for £1531 in stakes, and he has already very near repaid the price given recently for both him and Lustral.
That good galloper Marie’s Acre, is a regular worker in W. J. McLean’s team at Ellerslie. A place-getter in the last Railway Handicap, Marie’s Acre is expected to improve his form in the new season. He is a handsome horse and a half-brother to such good ones as Gay Blonde and Gay Sheila.
A likely newcomer in W. J. McLean’s team at Ellerslie is the peculiarly named Adtaa, a two-year-old by Acre-Bonny Mabel. Like his fullbrother Scotland, he is a bay and he indicates in his early work that he is likely to turn out well.
As Kilonsa is not a good traveller, H. Jury decided not to take her to Trentham. This mare is to be raced for a further'year by Mr H. Lynn so that her trainer is not now compelled to hurry her with a good season’s local racing ahead.
H. Jury’s latest addition is a rising two-year-old by Vaals-Ornamental. She is a neat youngster who is settling down to her early work in good style.
The Taranaki trainer, F. Smith, has already four rising two-year-olds to prepare for the new season. They are the Limond-Waterwings colt purchased at a high figure at the National Yearling Sales, a colt by Mus-ketoon-Caviare, a gelding by The AceValimond and a colt by FoxbridgeGrazelia. They are a good lot and as was the case this season, Smith should have plenty of success with his juveniles.
