MEETING OF EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP There was a very large attendance at a meeting of the Wairarapa Returned Soldiers’ Association held last night in Carterton. Mr H. J. Brass presided. The secretary, Mr A. E. Prentice, reported that the membership of the Wairarapa Association at the end of June stood at 285, made up as follows: Masterton 117, Carterton 41, Greytown 9, Featherston 33, Martinborough 25. At date, however, the- figure had risen to 276, which was an increase of 29 over July of last year, and an increase of 105 on the figures for June of last year. “That is quite satisfactory, but some members still need a shake up,” observed the chairman.
It was reported that the membership of the New Zealand R.S.A., with its 88 branches, totalled 30,265 at March 31, as compared with 28,626 at the same date last year. The Wairarapa was fourteenth on the Dominion list.
It was stated that at a meeting of the relief committee of the Association the financial statement disclosed a credit of £336 10s lid. Unemployed registrations totalled 46, 16 of which were absolutely unemployable. It was decided that no full-time relief worker should receive assistance from the Association, and after going through the applications, it was resolved to allocate relief as follows: —Single men with no dependents, 10s a week; married men with up to two dependents, 15s; married men with 4 dependents, 15s; married men. with over 4 dependents, £l. The sum of £2O is to be transferred from the Canteen Funds to the Poppy Fund to meet the cost of the grants to the unemployed. It was agreed to organise a social evening in Masterton on August 4. Two new members were elected. Messrs Brass, Robbins and Whyborn were appointed delegates to attend the annual conference of the N.Z.R.S.A., one to drop out. Lengthy consideration was given to remits to be discussed at the conference of the New Zealand R.S.A.
