PIG BREEDERS

VISIT TO MANAWATU FARMS. . WAIRARAPA PARTY’S TRIP. A particularly instructive and enjoyable tour of pig farms in the Manawatu was undertaken this week by about 20 or 30 members of Wairarapa Pig clubs, who visited the Palmerston North district at the invitation of Mr E. P. Nielsen, Wellington district pig club supervisor. The party proceeded to the Manawatu on Wednesday, being met on arrival by Mr Nielsen and conveyed to Massey College and to various district farms. A piggery built entirely on Danish lines, on the property of Mr Kellier, proved of great interest to the visitors. The layout of Mr Jensen’s farm at Tokomaru was considered to be on exceptionally good lines. Mr W. H. Bird, of Mauriceville West, on behalf of the Wairarapa party, congratulated Mr Jensen on his excellent farm and layout. On Wednesday evening the Wellington District Pig Council entertained members of pig clubs and breeders of the Manawatu and Wairarapa at dinner. Mr Kellier, president of the council, occupied the chair. Addresses on various aspects of pig management were given by Messrs Tennent and Scott, of the Department of Agriculture, a number of lantern slides also being shown on feeding and rearing methods. Further farms were inspected on Thursday in the Rongotea and Kairanga areas, including the property of Mr Hunt, a well-known stud Tamworth breeder. The party was entertained at lunch by the Rongotea Pig Club. Mr Bliss, of Carterton, on behalf of the Wairarapa members, expressed thanks for the way in which the party had been entertained and referred to the splendid layouts that had been seen on the farms visited. He hoped that at some future date the Manawatu members would visit the Wairarapa. In the afternoon a visit was paid to the Cheltenham Dairy Co. and other farms in the Feilding district.
