FEATHERSTON

PERSONAL ITEMS. ("Times-Age” Special.) Mr and Mrs Laurie, Auckland, are the guests of Mr and Mrs F. I. Watson. Mr D. Wilson, of the Bank of New Zealand staff, is confined to his bed through illness. Mrs Stanley Raper has been confined to her room during the last two days suffering from an attack of the influenza. BOROUGH IMPROVEMENTS Under the supervision of the chairman of the works committee (Mr R. F. Watson), the Borough Council has commenced the work of channelling and' curbing the footpath at the lower end of Fitzherbert Street. The work, which is being done by the unemployed, will, when finished, be a big improvement, and will give the entrance to the town a better appearance. MODERN' CULTIVATION With the modern methods of cultivation, it is surprising what can be done with gorse infected and stoney land. By means of a tractor and a heavy plough, such waste lands can be turned to considerable profit. On the Fernside estate, about 100 acres werebroken up last year and sown down in swedes. This land has been carrying 2000 hoggets through the winter. Before cultivation the 100 acres would not have carried 100 sheep. The method of working the land is to burn off the gorse, plough the land, pick off the .largest boulder, sow and roll with a heavy roller, which has the effect of burying the remaining boulders into the loose earth. When sown down in permanent pasture, plenty of subterranean should be sown, which does well in stoney land. The cost of the work is not high considering the good return.
