RELIEF IN CHINA

SALVATION ARMY’S WORK. SHARE IN ASSISTING REFUGEES. A message received from Commissioner Blowers, International Secretary, relating to the Army’s Relief Work in China reads as follows: — “The China refugee work is increasing. There are 175,000 people now in 160 camps in Shanghai. From 17,000 to 20,000 are in the immediate care of The Salvation Army. We are responsible for education, handicrafts, and sanitary health services. “The facilities include three hospitals, 25 doctors, 54 nurses, and 500 employees. The Khiaotung University camp population of 11,000 includes a school with 1,800 children, a Hospital with 500 beds, a Tuberculosis Hospital, a Leper Aslyum with 55 lepers, an Orphanage, and an Eventide Home. Soyabeafi milk is given daily to 16,000 underfed children. “The Salvation Army superintends all the Shanghai Camps. A camp in the French settlement has become a Training Centre for prospective Camp Managers, with a Chinese Adjutant as lecturer. “Spiritual work is booming and there are 1,500 converts in our camps. The Salvation Army is represented on seven Shanghai and two Nanking Committees. “The devotion and selfless toil of the Officers and helpers is beyond praise. “There are also extensive relief activities in other provinces.”
