ROAD CYCLING

WAIRARAPA CLUB NOTES ON SATURDAY’S RACE (By “Three-Speed”) The race held on Saturday was run under damp conditions. The ride was over the course to be used for the open race next Saturday. The race was fast considering the condition of the roads and the rain which made it rather uncomfortable foi’ the riders. K. Woollett, off scratch, rode a splendid race to gain first place and the fastest time honours. R. Copp and B. Harman, also off the scratch mark performed very well indeed to gain second and third place respectively. They also gained second and third fastest time. O. Morris, of Carterton, rode an exceptionally good race to finish fourth. C. Dykes and J. Duckett were doing well but had the misfortune to crash on the homeward journey, but luckily sustained only light injuries. J. Brader showed good form going down, but found the pace too hot for him on the return journey. Training will produce stamina. C. Gourlay, L. Green, M. Graham and E. Lefort also found the going too hard on the return trip. These boys should finish well up with a little more training. R. Killington did not ride at he caught a severe cold from last Saturday’s race. G. Swain, B. Dooling and W. Gay were not seen with the starters on Saturday, but followers of cycling hope to see them out next Saturday. J. McAliece rode on Saturday, but lack of training told on him on the return journey.

S. Branagan and D. Wishart have not been competitors for a few weeks. Their reappearance would be welcomed. Cyclists should not forget to do some hard training next week for the open race, as the club and its supporters want to see the local competitors well up at the finish.
