MEASLES EPIDEMIC
NUMBER OF SCHOOLS CLOSED. 1 (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 4. Many teachers and pupils throughout the Auckland Education Board's district are affected by the prevailing measles epidemic, and a number of schools in districts from Whangarei to Taneatua have been temporarily closed down. Roll numbers at the majority of schools remaining open are considerably below normal, and in cases where several teachers are away much difficulty is being experienced in carrying on. Wherever possible, relieving teachers are being engaged to assist. Although a number of serious cases were reported when the epidemic first assumed considerable proportions in the north about two months ago, few of the large number of cases that have occurred throughout the city and province more recently have been of a dangerous form. People of all ages have contracted the ailment, however, a case being reported in the city of a man of 74 being attacked. As with schools, staffs of business houses throughout the city continue to be depleted.
According to doctors, there appears to be no abatement in the prevalence of the disease. Numerous cases of chest and throat complaints continue to be reported, influenza being well represented.
