Mr W. H. Cruickshank, of Wellington, jvas on a visit to Masterton at the week-end.

Captain C. E. Weir, Royal New Zealand Artillery, qualified at the War Office examination for the British Army. The Rev R. A. Noakes, curate of Taumarunui, has been appointed priest-in-charge of the parish of Taranaki East. He will take up his duties early this month. Captain H. Shugg, Melbourne, has been appointed chief adjudicator for the New Zealand championship brass bands contest, which is to be held in Christchurch next February. Dr G. H. Scholefield, Parliamentary Librarian, and Mrs Scholefield, were visitors to Masterton during the weekend. and were the guests of Mr and Mrs A. D. Low, Essex Street. Dr R. N. Barrer, a son of Mr and Mrs T. R. Barrer, of Masterton, and a Fellow of Clare College, . Cambridge, will arrive in Wellington next Monday on a brief visit to New Zealand.

Mr L.. J. Ewing, Hastings, and Mr J. Drummond, Puketapu, two successful Hawke’s Bay applicants for the Royal Air Force, left during the weekend for Auckland, where they will join the Remuera for London. Mr Ewing is the elder son of Mr J. J. Ewing, Hastings, and Mr Drummond is the only son of Mr Phil Drummond, of Puketapu. Mr Drummond was a member of the New Zealand contingent of boy scouts which attended the international jamboree at Birkenhead, Liverpool, some years ago.

Mr G. H. Mackley, General Manager of Railways, left Wellington last night in the Limited express, and will sail from Auckland today in the Awatea. Mr Mackley, who is accompanied by his personal secretary, Mr W. T. W. Munro, will attend the biennial conference in Sydney of New Zealand and Australian railway commissioners. The conference will be attended by railway commissioners from all Australian States. Mr Mackley expects to return to Auckland by the Awatea, arriving on July 29. . The death has occurred at Wellington of Dr Gray Hassell, formerly superintendent of the Porirua Mental Hospital. Dr Hassell, who was born at Oamaru in 1860, studied medicine in Scotland arid graduated M. 8., C.M., at Aberdeen in 1881. In 1883 he gained his M.D. degree, and his F.R.C.P. deZealand by the ship Oxford. In 1885 gree in London, and returned to New he was appointed superintendent of Wellington Hospital, and three years later he transferred to the Mental Hospitals Department and became superintendent of Mount View Asylum. When Porirua Asylum (now Porirua Mental Hospital) was opened, Dr Hassell was appointed in charge, and he remained at Porirua until he reached the retiring age. Since then he had lived most of the time in Wellington.
