The nine of diamonds is called the curse of Scotland. After the Battle of Culloden, the Duke of Cumberland, known as “The Butcher” Duke, sentenced the entire Clan of MacDonalds of Scotland to death’ because they presided with Bonnie Prince Charlie. He was playing cards at the time, and it is said that he seized the nine of diamonds on which to write the death sentence.
