PASTURE IMPROVEMENT
NORTH AUCKLAND EXAMPLE. A striking example of -pasture improvement is to be seen on property in North Auckland, states the Journal of Agriculture. A small farm of 30 acres two years ago produced 2,9001 b. of butterfat. With harrowing and top-dressing in two years it now produces 4,0001 b. of butterfat per annum. The soil consists of a heavy clay loam which in parts is podsolized. Two years ago the farmer commenced harrowing the pastures, four strokes each year, accompanied by a dressing of super at 4cwt. per acre. The original pasture of brown-top, danthonia, and scattered Lotus hispidus, with quite an appreciable amount of moss, has given place to a vigorous white-clover and dark-green paspalum. An area of the original pasture has not been treated
and receives the same stocking as the remainder. This area, not top-dressed for at least fifteen years, is neglected by stock and stands out to disadvantage to the remaining portion of the farm.
