The War Department announced that an “Army flying fortress” had secretly completed the first transcontinental stratosphere flight of 2,317 miles in 11 hours 20 minutes. The pilot, Colonel Robert Olds and the crew of seven, required to remain under oxygen throughout. The altitude varied from 13,000 to 16,000 feet.
