Nine Japanese warplanes dropped 71 bombs, causing one thousand civilian casualties and starting many fires. MEDIATION RUMOUR CHIANG KAI-SHEK’S STAND HONG KONG, July 1. The presence here of the British, German, and Italian Ambassadors, and the Swedish and Swiss Ministers, continues as a basis for the rumour that mediation is contemplated. In a statement in this connection, General Chiang Kai-Shek said that China would not welcome either British or other mediation unless it will restire Chinese Sovereignty.
