The hull of a large sea-going Maori canoe ha's been presented to the Canterbury I Jduseum. The canoe, which is the gift c if the Blenheim Borough Council, and is about 40 feet long, is considered by authorities to be of great histories 1 and scientific value. Only one othe «r specimen exists in New Zealand, in the Auckland Museum. The canoe, ’ .Followed from a single totara tree, w as originally given to the Blenheim J terough Council in 1925. by Mr F. H. ? Jutland, of Seddon. It was then placed . in Pollard Park, Blenheim. Althoug’ a the canoe was built as late as 1869, the actual work was done by Maor j craftsmen employing the tradition? ji Maori methods of canoe building. Sue! i sea-going canoes are rare, because dur? jirg the Maori wars all of them that cou fc’t be found were destroyed under mil itary orders.
