POLITICAL CLAIMS

MR HAMILTON ON PARTY SPEECHES 4 PROPAGANDA & BOOST. WORK OF GOVERNMENTS IN THE PAST. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The House of Representatives met at 10.30 a.m. When the Leader- of the Opposition (the Hon. A. Hamilton) continued the Address-in-Reply Debate he congratulated both the mover (Dr. D. G. McMillan) and the seconder ( Mr B. Roberts) of the motion on the speeches they had mad’a in the House on the previous evening, but said there had been little information contained in the speeches, which comprised mostly propaganda and “boost.” One would think, he said, that New Zealand had done nothing in the past in the direction of a health system or a superannuation scheme, but he would point to the records of past governments in these matters. New Zealand at present had one of the finest hospital systems in the world. The Opposition, said Mr Hamilton, did not object to the extension of health or superannuation systems, so long as it thought this extension was proceeding along right lines.

Turning to the question of guaranteed prices for butterfat, Mr Hamilton said the prices being paid under this system were not as high as the average payout to farmers under the old system for the past 20 years, slump years included.
