SEVERANCE OF RELATIONS WITH OFFENDERS NOT FAVOURED BY MR HULL. WOULD MEAN RADICAL DEPARTURE.

WASHINGTON, June 30. A letter from Mr Cordell Hull, U.S. Secretary of State, to Representative Bieter states that the severance of commercial relations in order to discourage the bombing of civilian populations would “call for a radical departure from the policy of non-interfer-ence and non-involvement which we have so far pursued. I think I may say that this Government will continue its endeavours, in conformity with its policy of non-intervention, to exert a restraining and ameliorative influence whenever and however practicable.”

PROTEST BY POPE. THE JAPANESE REPLY. (Recd This Day, 10.20 a.m.) ROME, June 30. It is revealed that the Pope recently communicated with Japan, in order to protest against the bombing of open cities. General Ugaki replied that the utmost was being done to ensure the safety of civilians.
