COLONELS RETIRED
MILITARY MANIFESTO AUTHORS “ACT OF DISCIPLINE” (By Telegraph- Press Association.) ’ WELLINGTON, This Day. The retirement of Colonel A. S. Wilder, D. 5.0., M.C., V.D., Colonel C. R. Spragg, V.D., Colonel R. F. Gambrill, V.D., and Colonel N. L. Macky, M.C., was announced in a Gazette notice last night. The Gazette stated that the Governor-General, Lord Galway, had approved of these four colonels being posted to the retired list, with permission to retain their rank and wear the prescribed uniform. This is regarded as a disciplinary measure, taken in consequence of the manifesto issued by these colonels at Auckland on May 18, in which they expressed the view that the statement on defence made at Dargaville by the Minister of Defence the Hon F. Jones, was inadequate. They stated that the present organisation and establishment of the force was insufficient for the defence of New Zealand, and said that they had issued the manifesto solely to ensure that an adequate and sufficient land force should be available for the defence of New Zealand.
