MOTHERS & SONS
Y.M.C.A. ANNUAL TEA. ADDRESS BY-MRS P. R. WELCH. The Mothei’ and Son Tea held by the Masterton Y.M.C.A. last evening was largely attended and proved most enjoyable. Mrs G. R. Beecroft, president of the Ladies’ Auxiliary, presided and extended a welcome to those present. Mrs P. R. Welch, the principal speaker of the eyening, congratulated the auxiliary on the large attendance and the success of the gathering. Mothers and sons, she said, were most grateful to such an institution as the Y.M.C.A. for the guidance and help offered to their boys. ’ What an important task, observed Mrs Welch, God had given to mothers to mould the lives of boys to become noble men. The problem of guiding boys was to a great extent the mother’s responsibility and the boy was largely the result of the mother’s training. Mothers must strive to understand boys to help them in the best way. Boys, too, had a responsibility, said Mrs Welch, to work out their own problems. They should never fail to take their mothers into their confidence, as mothers were always anxious’to help. Boys should learn to do jobs for the love of helping. Payment for everything done was not what true boys should look for. Occasionally it was a fine thing for a boy to make some small gift to his mother. Such delightful acts meant a great deal in a mother’s life. After a short community sing the boys their mothers and items were given as follow:—Recitation, Lionel Kaan; solo, Miss Robinson; recitation, Miss Miller; instrumental item, Jack Hodgetts; mouth organ solo, Alan Tooby. The toast to Mothei- was proposed by John Blackwood. Mrs Lyttle replied and thanked the boys for the fine way in which the toas.t had been honoured.
Bouquets were presented to Mesdames Welch and Lyttle and a shoulder spray to Mrs Beecroft. Thanks were expressed to Mesdames Welch, Lyttle and Miller Hope, to those who gave items, Mrs Scharnweber for the flowers and the Y.M.C.A. staff.
